Yu Deng 邓煜

I am a professor of mathematics at the University of Chicago. I work at the intersection of nonlinear partial differential equations, probability, and mathematical physics.

Much of my research asks how large-scale laws emerge from microscopic dynamics. I combine analytic, probabilistic, and combinatorial methods to study kinetic theory and wave turbulence, probabilistic PDEs, statistical physics, and damping phenomena in fluids and plasmas.

I studied at Peking University before completing my undergraduate degree at MIT. After receiving my PhD from Princeton in 2015 under the supervision of Alexandru D. Ionescu, I spent three years as a Courant Instructor at NYU and then joined USC. I moved to the University of Chicago in 2024 and have been a professor here since June 2025.
